In the fall of 2016, I took a very quick trip to Prince Edward Island in Canada. And by quick, I mean I got there and back in about 8 days. It was a little nuts. To start at the very beginning (it’s a very good place to start) click here to go to the introduction.
HEADING NORTH
From my last stop in Springfield, I drove another 5ish hours north, which landed me in an Airbnb in Orono, Maine, near Bangor and the University of Maine.
Maine looked exactly how I picture it always must exist: abundant woods in fall colors with a light rain and fog. A friend told me to “watch out for Stephen King” while I was in Maine, and since I was mostly just driving down the highway, I pictured spotting the author along the side of the road, like the rest of the wildlife.
MY AIRBNB
On this leg of the trip, I really just drove to my next Airbnb and stayed there. I didn’t look around or try to find anything to do. But IĀ did have a great time, chiefly because my Airbnb host was so friendly!
Let me tell you about this place–I had a loft all to myself, with a very comfortable bedroom and a living area above the main living room of the house. The bathroom was large and had a fabulous waterfall shower with a pebble floor. Oh my gosh, that shower was the best! And I fell asleep with the windows open to the sound of the rain in the Maine woods. It was heavenly!
But the best thing about the place is the host, Clint. He is super easy to talk to and we had a great conversation that lasted quite a while when I first arrived. Then he offered me yummy leftover food from the fridge for dinner while he went out with friends.
The next morning, he made me a breakfast of pancakes with Maine blueberries and sausage made from his own hogs. Then we had a whole big conversation about that. It was great!
I just regret that I didn’t have time to hang around more and see the area. It felt pretty remote, but I’m sure I could have found something to do. At this point, I think I was getting properly tired of driving so much and was ready to get to Canada. I spent most of my evening getting together what I needed to cross the border and get to my destination–offline Google maps and printed directions to my next Airbnb. Clint even had a computer station in the loft which made all that easy.

The air bnb is cute! By the way, is air bnb something you sign up for? Like you pay a ton for a membership and you can stay at any air bnb you come to?
Oh no–there’s no membership fee. It’s like paying for a hotel, except it’s a spare room in someone’s house. It’s more interesting than staying in a hotel (which are all kind of the same) and usually it’s cheaper. Most of my Airbnb’s this trip were around $50, which is on the cheap side for a hotel room. This one was closer to $100, but the experience was closer to a proper bed & breakfast. I mean, this guy fed me twice so that’s pretty awesome and a savings for me.
